VFD for AHU Fans in UAE Plant Rooms: Selection, Derating and Commissioning

Choose a VFD for an AHU fan based on the motor’s full-load current at the real peak ambient temperature in the plant room, not just on its kW rating. Then add a reactor, plan how it will behave in bypass and fire mode during the design stage, and test the skip rates and PID scaling before starting up the machine.

For MEP contractors and consulting engineers, this guide walks them through every step. It suggests a project in Dubai that is overseen by DEWA, since approvals are different in other emirates.

How do you size a VFD for an AHU fan motor?

Size of the motor’s full-load current on the nameplate, then check that the drive’s stated output current, which, after derating, is enough to cover it. The load on AHU fans can change, so there isn’t much demand for overloading. Checking still needs to be done on start-up and any route changes.

The manufacturer’s datasheet will tell you the duty rating (normal vs. heavy duty), as definitions vary by brand. Make sure the motor can be powered by an inverter by checking its insulation class and, for bigger frames, its bearing protection.

Check the input voltage range of the drive against the supply as well. DEWA’s rules say that equipment must be rated for the nominal voltage that DEWA says (check the most recent version).

How much energy does a VFD really save on an AHU fan?

It seems like a lot. Less often, and it depends on the load profile. The shaft power of a centrifugal fan changes as the speed squared. The best shaft power at 80% speed is 0.8³, which is about 51% of full-speed power.

That number doesn’t take into account the static pressure, minimum fresh airflow, filter loads, or motor and drive losses in the system. Costs are really cut down by the time spent going slower, not by a big amount. As a fair way to compare drives at partial load, IEC 61800-9-2 sets out efficiency classes and test methods for the losses of the motor and drive system (see the IEC standard page).

What derating applies in a hot UAE plant room?

Each drive has an ambient rating that it can handle. Above it, you need to either lower the output current or cool down the enclosure. The curve is different for each model. The only official datasheet is the one from the manufacturer.

One print-out of an MD290 user guide says that it can work in temperatures ranging from -10 °C to +40 °C. That can go over a plant room, a rooftop cage, or a panel that gets direct sunlight. Not the weather outside, but the temperature inside the room and the panel at full load. On Inovance’s literature page, you can find the manufacturer’s files.

Datasheet item Why it matters
Maximum rated ambient Above this, derate or cool
Derating curve versus ambient Sets usable output current at site conditions
Derating versus switching frequency Affects motor noise and available current
Heat loss at rated load Sizes panel ventilation or cooling
Enclosure type and IP rating Decides dust and cooling strategy

How do you handle harmonics and power factor?

To fix the current that standard drives draw being messed up, you should add a line or DC reactor and use a harmonic study to decide on filtering when a transformer or generator is shared by many drives. Some drives have a DC reactor built in; for example, one summary of the MD290 says it has one, but check this for each model.

IEEE 519 is the usual reference for harmonic limits at the point of common coupling. DCPS runs load analysis and power system studies, and its portfolio includes harmonic filters and sine wave filters. Dcps Middle East

What about long motor cables?

Long cables between drive and motor can cause voltage overshoot at the motor terminals and extra charging current. The fix is an output reactor or sine wave filter within the drive manufacturer’s maximum cable-length guidance.

Bypass, fire-mode and BMS integration

Specify all three at design stage. With a bypass, the motor starts direct-on-line if the drive faults, so check that DOL start and full-speed airflow are acceptable to the fan and ductwork. Motor protection must also suit DOL.

If the fan is part of smoke control, the drive’s override behaviour must follow the fire-engineering design and Civil Defence approval. For BMS, confirm the protocol the specific drive supports natively or through an option card.

Enclosure, IP rating and dust

Choose the enclosure from the room environment and the drive’s heat loss. Dust and cooling airflow pull in opposite directions. Filtered ventilation needs a maintenance schedule, while a sealed enclosure needs a heat exchanger or cooling unit.

Approvals and documentation

In Dubai, electrical installations must follow the rules set out by DEWA, which can be found on the DEWA circulars and regulations page. What papers you send to the consultant depends on how they ask for them. It depends on the equipment and route whether the drive needs to be marked with an ECAS or not. In other parts of the UAE, check with the local company and government first.

Lead time and supply

Commissioning checklist

  1. Verify supply voltage, phase sequence and earthing.
  2. Enter motor nameplate data and run auto-tune.
  3. Check rotation before coupling, or with belts off.
  4. Set minimum and maximum speed from the airflow design.
  5. Find and program skip frequencies to avoid fan or duct resonance.
  6. Set ramp times to avoid overcurrent and belt slip.
  7. Scale the PID setpoint and feedback signals.
  8. Test the fire or override input and the bypass changeover.
  9. Test BMS communication and fault reporting.
  10. Save the parameter backup and record the final settings.

How DCPS supports HVAC drive projects

DCPS offers VFD services and programming alongside HVAC and MEP services. Where a fixed-speed fan only needs a controlled start, see soft starter services. For drive-specific detail, see the Inovance MD290 buying guide. DCPS supplies and commissions VFDs. To discuss a drive selection or panel, contact the team.
